However, I'd like you do go deeper into the issue of academic dishonesty due to the misuse of AI chat bots by undergraduates. There is no doubt that educators must change their assessments to focus on the learning process rather than on products; the literature clearly supports this needed shift.
Vague policies on academic honesty regarding AI tools pay lip service to the challenges that students and faculty face in making such a shift, such as "the university recognizes the importance of our students learning how to use AI tools (for their future success); however, your professors will determine when AI tool use is appropriate (or not)". Managing AI tool use is being left to professors, on the one hand, with little to no guidelines for support - no framework(s) - and to students, on the other, with the hope that they won't want to offload their cognitive work. In practice, this is a recipe for failure that leads to academic dishonesty and distrust as well as an undermining of learning outcomes. The gap between the "actual use" of AI tools and "appropriate use" is huge.
The issue of privacy also looms large. Universities have been adopting customized, brand-name AI tools that promise protection for our students' privacy while logged into the university network, e.g., promising that users' interactions will not be used to train AI models. However, there is no transparency provided by Google, Microsoft, or OpenAI about how they actually deliver on such a promise.
Finally, one of the core claims in support of AI tool adoption is that they "improve efficiency". People hear this claim and naturally want to benefit, and they also don't want to be left out. But "efficiency" in the workplace is not the same as "efficiency" in an academic context. In fact, removing the "friction" required for actual learning to occur becomes highly inefficient. The AI tech companies conveniently ignore this as they compete for market share both in the business world and in academia. Although your article alludes to this difference, I'd love to hear your more detailed thoughts on this point as well.

Teacher training is a big issue, as is general AI literacy (and I’m talking about critical thinking and not tool use literacy). With respect to the tools adopted by universities. These need to comply with regulations (at least in the US and I would assume also in Europe). They therefore have to run in a University sandbox. At our institution we have an institutional license for ChatGPT and that is sandboxed.

As of March 2026, while a majority of states had proposed bills, only about six states had enacted laws to regulate AI tools in education. Here, I’m referring to author Izzy Aaron’s April 9 article at Multistate: How States Are Regulating AI in Education this Legislative Session. At my own institution, we already have several tools sandboxed (Microsoft’s Notebook LM, Google Gemini, and a scheduled release of ChatGPT for this fall semester). So, at least there is a promise of privacy there. But that is just one issue. More importantly, these tools have been and are continuing to be introduced to academic communities in the absence of sufficient regulatory and pedagogical frameworks. I would like to see advocates for AI in education addressing such gaps - especially on the pedagogical side. It is unrealistic (and unfair) to expect educators to fill these gaps on their own.
With regulations I was referring to FERPA and equivalent legal frameworks that protect student privacy. I don’t think universal AI regulations for educational institutions are necessary tbh. Universities are generally capable of regulating that themselves.
I actually teach at a Tier-1 research university, and unfortunately, I wouldn’t describe its approach to regulating AI tool use as effective, especially in regard to maintaining academic honesty at the undergraduate level. I hope that it will prove to be capable in time.
